What Are Dental Fillings?

This process involves meticulously removing the decayed portion of the tooth and filling the void with a dental material, preventing further damage and restoring the tooth's functionality. Our practice provides two types of fillings: composite resin, which can be color-matched to blend seamlessly with your natural teeth, and amalgam, commonly referred to as silver fillings.

What Is The Dental Filling Procedure Like?

Decay Removal - Our Lakeshore Family Dental team removes the decayed or damaged part of the tooth using specialized instruments.

Filling Placement - The cleaned cavity is filled with a dental material, such as amalgam or composite resin.

Shaping and Polishing - The filling material is shaped to match the natural contours of the tooth and polished for a smooth finish.

Types Of Fillings

Composite Resin - Composite resins have become the gold standard for treating decay and replacing lost tooth structure. Since the color of a composite resin filling can be customized, it is the most aesthetically pleasing option. Composite resin is ideal for repairing chipped or cracked teeth, filling in a tooth gap, correcting dental discoloration, protecting any exposed tooth root from gum recession, or changing the shape of teeth. Patients may also choose composite resin for cavity fillings as they are bonded to the teeth in layers and therefore require less drilling away of the natural tooth.

Amalgam - Made up of silver, copper, mercury, and tin, amalgam fillings are the most durable and economical option for our patients. Commonly used for filling in molar cavities, amalgam fillings can withstand biting pressure and can be placed in a single visit. Despite the mercury content, these silver fillings are perfectly safe for anyone aged six and up.
